Helsa Morung Retreat

Designed along the theme of a Konyak habitat, Helsa Morung is a beautiful homestay run by a village head-woman in Mon, Nagaland.

Overview

While Morung stands for the bachelor dorm in a Konyak tribal village, Mon. Helsa is an acronym made from the first alphabet of the names of the children of the head-woman owner of the property — (H-Hamwang, E-Ethiel, L-Lemnon, S-Suzanne, A-Angam).

In the earlier days, a successful headhunter was awarded a tattoo on his head or face, that spoke of his achievements and was flushed with pride. The more the tattoos, the powerful the head hunter was in his tribe. Though headhunting days are long over, even today you can see some distinct tattoos on the face and chests of the old men from the tribe, who earlier lived the tradition. You can still, hear the faint songs of their bravery echoing along the hillside.

Accommodation

When one stays at the Helsa Morung it invokes nostalgia of the times gone by. Designed with traditional Konyak aesthetics, the homestay comes across as a part of a larger village setup that allows you to experience living with the locals. The property offers three types of accommodations: 5 Konyak Style Cottages, 8 traditional Konyak Bamboo Cottages, and 5 Deluxe Tents. The tents and cottages are basic with a bamboo screen that leads onto a balcony overlooking the forest. The main attraction here is the lounge and dining room that is built in a Morung style. Helsa Morung is well situated for visiting the local villages of Longwa and Hong Poi.
